"A moment, that's all I need," Saydah cautioned herself as she stood knee deep in the Pacific Ocean. The moon was halfway gone and she could make out the outline of the sun. The water was warm for this time of the day and she waded further in. Her mind was occupied with pictures of Madau, his eyes especially.
In her mind she saw a monster yet in her heart she felt a strange tug. He was somehow familiar to her and she couldn't help but wonder what other deep dark secrets Tipitipin kept from her. For the moment she needed to immerse herself in the cooling feel of these salty waters. The last moon beam shone brightly on her smooth brown skin, creating an irridescent almost lizard like color on her firm body.
Her long brown hair draped behind her like a veil and she stood motionless allowing the waves to caress her. She refused to feel anything for the monstrosity that she recently encountered and began devising a plan to get more information from the old man once she got back to the shack.
The night was suddenly still and the coconut leaves on shore made no more than a slight rustle and she felt around the soft sand with her toes. A strange clicking noise was coming from somewhere farther and deeper. She held her breath and dipped her head under the waves and waited...."there!" she gasped as she pulled herself back to the surface.
Click, click, click, the sounds were getting louder and closer and without thinking twice Sayday dove. She swam deeper and deeper following the sounds, her heart pounding lightly against her rib cage. She could not see a damn thing, it was like trying to see through tar so she followed her ears.
Click, click, click, the sounds were suddenly everywhere, something brushed her legs. She turned using her hands to paddle her eyes still not adapting to the thick blackness. She was surprised at how long she was able to hold her breath, she was pretty capable of suspension under water. She could feel more than one presence around her and decided that the smartest thing was to stay still. Her hands still moving to keep her in one spot as she waited...
"Your Highness, what do we owe this visit?" a smooth voice asked from somewhere to her right. She waited for more.
"You may speak my child, we have allowed it," the voice continued soothingly.
Saydah tested it out and opened her mouth, she tasted the salt water but found that that was all she got. "Who are you?" she asked the obvious question.
"There must be a better question," the calming voice replied followed by the clicking sound.
"Who are you?" she asked again this time moving in the direction of where the voice came.
"We are called the Soumas," the voice answered.
"And exactly who are the Soumas?" Saydah asked still trying to see through the darkness.
"Think of us as the Scales, keeping everything in balance," the voice again.
Saydah was getting frustrated with the short answers but was still curious for more information.
"I want to see you," she stated.
"As you wish," the voice answered with no hesitation.
And before she could prepare herself the blackness started to crack. Zig zagging lines appeared going off in different directions and just like glass Saydah heard a soft crack and the blackness shattered into a million pieces. The full impact of what happened threw Saydah completely out of place.
Her eyes quickly adjusted to the change and she looked around her confused. Click, click, click, the sounds were as it was before. She gasped when she realized how close she was to the beings that called themselves The Soumas.
Six misshaped figures floated before her, they were humungous, their heads were weirdly shaped but the rest of their bodies were fish like, more so dolphin. Saydah could see the hairy torso and she followed the outline of the body to the head and almost started screaming when she realized that she was completely off.
The heads were nothing but a mass of hairy tentacles a strange mixture of tube-like dark ropes covered with small canine hair. She couldn't see any eyes or mouth or noses for that matter and she was immediately repulsed.
She saw that they had arms that was also flimsy tube shaped. She kicked her legs and tried to move a little to the surface.
"Do not fear my child, you are safe with us," the one closer to her right spoke causing her to turn her head sharply towards it.
She was facing the strange being with wide eyes now. She watched the bubbles coming out from somewhere in the tangle of hairs/tubes.
"Click, click, we have been waiting for you," the voice said again this time Saydah saw a faint light coming from the torso-fish part of the thing. She noticed that every time it spoke the light flickered.
"What are you talking about?" She finally said as her eyes continued to take in the sights before her.
"You are here because of the other half," the voice said matter-of-factly.
"Soumas, what do you know of Madau?" Saydah asked with more purpose her green eyes flashing.
